Abstract

The National Education Policy 2020 places teachers at the centre of educational transformation and proposes a major restructuring of teacher preparation in India. Its vision includes multidisciplinary teacher education, a four-year Integrated Teacher Education Programme (ITEP), stronger professional standards, continuous professional development, mentoring, technology integration, inclusive pedagogy and closer alignment between teacher preparation and the new school structure. These provisions create an opportunity to move teacher education away from fragmented, examination-oriented and weakly practised programmes towards intellectually rigorous, professionally grounded and socially responsive preparation. Yet the transition is complex. India’s teacher education system is marked by uneven institutional capacity, shortages of qualified teacher educators, weak school-internship partnerships, regulatory fragmentation, digital inequality, linguistic diversity and significant variation across states. This conceptual policy-review article analyses the principal opportunities and challenges that arise from implementing NEP 2020 in teacher education. It draws on the policy itself and subsequent initiatives of the Ministry of Education, National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) and National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT), including ITEP, the National Professional Standards for Teachers (NPST), the National Mission for Mentoring (NMM), and the National Curriculum Framework for School Education 2023. The article argues that structural reform alone will not improve teacher quality. The success of NEP 2020 will depend on institutional investment, professionally prepared teacher educators, carefully designed practicum, context-sensitive regulation and sustained academic support. A phased and collaborative implementation strategy is proposed so that reform strengthens both quality and equity.
